The Capital Gazette newspaper’s offices in Annapolis, Maryland, were the scene of a shooting on Thursday that left five people dead, according to authorities.

“I don’t know what to say other than our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families, and we take comfort knowing that they are in God’s embrace,” Steve Schuh, the county executive of Anne Arundel, said.

Several other people were “gravely injured,” At a press conference, William Krampf, the temporary chief of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, spoke.

The attacker has been taken into custody, according to Lt. According to Ryan Frashure, the department had no other suspects. He described the person being held as a white male carrying a shotgun, according to Efe.

According to Schuh, the shooter was discovered by police hiding under a table inside the newspaper office, which is housed in a building with a number of other tenants, including at least one medical practice.

“We did recover what we thought may have been an explosive device,” Krampf said. “That’s taken care of now. Members of the bomb squad are here. No additional explosives are expected from us.”

The suspect “has not been very forthcoming” with information, Schuh said.

“To my knowledge, there was no verbal aspect to the incident where he declared his motives or anything else, so at this point we just don’t know,” the county official said.

The incidents were described on Twitter by one of the reporters who was in the newsroom at the time.

“The glass office door was shot through by the gunman, who then started shooting at several workers inside. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad,” After the shooting ceased, Phil Davis of The Capital Gazette posted a message online.

On the incident, US President Donald Trump made a brief statement, also on Twitter.

“I received information about the Annapolis, Maryland, shooting at the Capital Gazette before leaving Wisconsin. The victims and their families are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene,” he said.

Authorities in several US cities, including New York, sent police to media outlets’ offices in response to the violence in Maryland.

The New York Police Department said that its deployment of counter-terrorism officers was based not on any specific threat, but “out of an abundance of caution until we learn more about the suspect and motives behind the Maryland shooting.”
